Selecting Your Replacement Solid Timber Floor
The following guide has been created to assist you in understanding the process for replacing your timber flooring. As this is a natural product that is finished on site by hand, every job turns out differently and exactly matching existing flooring is generally not possible. With many timber species becoming hard to source or completely unavailable and floor coatings significantly changing in colour over time, the process becomes even more complicated.

The Australian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA) has created guides covering every aspect of timber flooring for both installers and customers. Below you will find these linked to assist in the selection process.

Select Grade
The first step in the selection process is choosing your desired timber, including the grading and dimensions. Please view the following guide on Hardwood Flooring Grades that outlines exactly what the different grades entail.

Please note that if your job is an insurance replacement
and you select an option other than the closest match,
any cost beyond the closest available match will be quoted
privately.

Selecting Your Coating and Sheen Level
Polyurethane and Water Based coatings have difference strengths and features. They also age differently over time. We recommend reading the ATFA Coating Choices guide to assist in your selection. If matching in with existing flooring we generally recommend keeping the same coating system.

Sheen level can highlight the timber floor, or hide imperfections. While partial repairs are usually matched to the existing coating, full re-sanding allows you to choose the ideal gloss level for your home.
When we are re-sanding existing timber floors, the ATFA Colour Change When Re-Sanding Older Floors Guide is an invaluable tool in understanding the final result.

A solid timber flooring replacement is a significant job that usually runs over several weeks. This is also a hand finished floor, rather than a factory finished board, there is some degree of variation and imperfection to be expected. It is essential to read through the ATFA Owner Expectations Guide so we are on the same page throughout your selection and installation process.
